Sports: Eagles End Tournament in Boise




Eastern Washington came up short against the host Broncos in four sets


The Boise State Classic ended on Saturday afternoon for Eastern Washington volleyball, as the team dropped its final game, 1-3, to the host school, Boise State. After winning the first set, Eastern faced an efficient attack that allowed the Broncos to win the game.
 
"We played a very physical team in Boise State today," head coach Jon Haruguchi said."I felt we had a solid game plan and at times executed our plan very well. We had to make some in-game adjustments and several folks stepped up nicely. We can see the growth and look forward to the next opportunity to get better."

Eastern jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first set on a pair of kills from Sage Brustad. Boise St. responded with a 7-2 stretch that put them in front. The Eagles continued to score, but the Broncos matched them and did not surrender the lead at first. Eastern managed to tie the set at 15 on a block from Katie Fleck and Sadie Bacon. Boise St. appeared to separate at 20-16, but the Eagles did not falter and continued to score. The Eagles would tie the set at 22 on a service ace from Lindsey Russell. A Bronco error would give Eastern the lead and they had a point advantage. After Boise St. tied the match twice, Alyssa Radke would give the Eagles the lead at 25-24. Another attack error from the Broncos would allow Eastern to win the set, 26-24, giving them a 1-0 game lead.

The Eagles hit well in the set, recording a .308 attack percentage. Boise St. had a .237 percentage.  

To begin the second set, Eastern carried the momentum from the first, grabbing a 4-2 lead with two more kills from Brustad. The set then moved to a tight battle between the two teams. Boise St. continued to attack and managed to pull ahead with a 6-0 run for 13-9 lead. The run turned out to be the difference in the set, as the Eagles could not make up any ground on the Broncos. Boise St. won the set 25-19 and tied the game, 1-1.

Eastern hit better in the second than the first, recording a .314 percentage. The Broncos hit a strong .448 in the second to pull even with the Eagles.

The third set started competitive and Eastern jumped ahead 6-4 will another kill from Brustad. Boise St. would then launch an 8-0 run to double up the Eagles at 12-6. Eastern tried to chip away at the Bronco lead but could not put together enough points take back the lead. Boise St. continued to score and won the set 25-15 and now had a 2-1 advantage in the game.

In the set, the Eagles were held to a .080 attack percentage, while the Broncos hit .370.

The game now moved to the fourth set, with Eastern looking to force a fifth set. Boise St. had the edge early, building a 5-2 lead and then extending it out to 9-5. The Eagles fought hard to get the lead back in the set, as Radke and Bacon carried the scoring load. Bacon would earn a kill to pull Eastern to within one of the Broncos, 16-17. With the lead trimmed, Boise St. hit back with a 3-0 burst to hold the Eagles at arm's length. After two scores by Eastern, the Broncos used another 3-0 run to close in on the game point opportunity. Boise St. won the final set, 25-20, and had a 3-1 win in the game. The Eagles would hit .050 in the fourth and Broncos held a .250 percentage.

Eastern finished the match with a .193 attack percentage and Boise St. had a .323 stat line. The Eagles' record now sits at 3-5 and the Broncos improve to 7-1.

Key Statistics
Sage Brustad led the team with 17 kills and hit .125 in the game. Brustad recorded her second double-double of the season, getting 11 digs. It is Brustad's fifth career double-double. Brustad has now recorded double-digit kills in every game this season.

Lindsey Russell recorded a double-double for the second game in a row, with 38 assists and 10 digs. It is Russell's fourth double-double of the season and the 14th in her career.

Alyssa Radke set a new career high in kills for the second straight game, with 15 against the Broncos while hitting .433. Radke has double-digit kills in three-straight games.

Eastern had a 9.0 to 8.0 advantage in blocks. Renata Lopez Morales recorded six block assists. Radke added four block assists, with Katie Fleck and Sadie Bacon each adding three.

Bacon nearly was in double figures with nine kills and had a .333 hitting percentage.

The Eagles had four service aces and eight errors. Boise St. had five aces and seven errors.

Eastern Washington will be on the court this Tuesday night, Sep. 13, against Gonzaga. The game will be in Spokane and the first serve will be at 6 p.m. Pacific Time.
