Pirates split on Friday in California

LA VERNE, Calif. – Whitworth University split on Friday at the Whittier Invitational, sweeping Pomona-Pitzer Colleges before falling to 7th-ranked University of La Verne in four sets.

Amblessed Okemgbo had 26 kills on Friday as the Pirates moved to 3-2 overall.  They will play Chapman University and Whitter College on Saturday at Whittier.

Game 1 – Whitworth 3, Pomona-Pitzer 0
Okemgbo had 13 kills and Lauren Kremer poured in 13 points to lead the Pirates past the Sagehens 25-23, 25-19, 25-23 on Claremont, California.  The Pirates served nine aces.

after the Bucs nearly gave up a 24-19 advantage.  Whitworth controlled the second set, using an early 7-2 run to take the lead.  The final set was tight throughout before Kremer's kill ended the match.

Okemgbo's kill total was a match-high.  Kremer finished with eight kills, three service aces and four block assists for her 13-point total.  Mya Rodriguez had 19 assists and also served three aces.  Josephine Thompson had 16 assists and tied for the team lead with 12 digs.

Samantha Grabb had 11 kills for Pomona-Pitzer (2-2).

Game 2 – La Verne 3, Whitworth 1
The Pirates pulled out the opening set, but could not overcome two-time All-American Mya Ray in a 23-25, 25-21, 25-12, 25-17 loss to the 7th-ranked Leopards (4-0).

Whitworth took a 23-19 lead in the opening set before ULV rallied to tie.  The Bucs retook the lead on a service error then won the set on a kill by Okemgbo.

Whitworth trailed 21-13 in the second set before rallying within 23-21.  The Leopards won on Ray's ace.

La Verne controlled the final to sets to win going away.

Okemgbo had 13 more kills in the match, but was the only Pirate to hit double figures in points.  Whitworth was limited to a .073 hitting percentage.  Rodriguez had 19 assists, while Thompson had 13 assists and 13 digs. 

Ray hit .487 with 23 kills, two aces, two solo blocks and two block assists for 28 of the team's 65 total points.
