Notice of (Virtual) Public Hearing Tree Code Update - November 8, 2021

REMINDER: TREE CODE PUBLIC HEARING

THIS IS A REMINDER that the Medina City Council will hold a virtual public hearing on the tree code proposed amendments on Monday, November 8, 2021, at 4PM. The purpose of this hearing will be to consider public testimony for and against amendments to the tree code.

The draft code, timeline for adoption, summary of changes, open house PowerPoint, and supporting documents may be found here: Medina Tree Code Update 2021 - Medina, Washington (medina-wa.gov)This page will continue to be updated over the next few days.

One of the proposed changes includes lowering the threshold of what counts as a Legacy tree from 50” DBH to 36” DBH. Diameter Breast Height (DBH) is determined by measuring the outside bark of a tree trunk, 4 ½ feet (54-inches) above the surrounding existing ground surface. To provide a visual aid for what 36” DBH means, a measuring stick has been placed to the left of the front doors at city hall with 4 ½-feet highlighted as well as a 36” diameter hula hoop. Please feel free to stop by city hall at any time over the next week to take a look.

For an additional general reference, the Giant Sequoia across the street from city hall at 520 Evergreen Point Road was identified as having a 68” DBH in 2017.
