Parks Grounds Lead Worker

Persons in this classification perform all tasks associated with their work group. They competently and conscientiously operate and care for all equipment needed to complete the tasks of their work group. Work will be performed cooperatively with other employees as incumbents make on-site job assignments, troubleshoot on-site problems, ensure the availability of equipment needed to complete assignments, resolve onsite problems between employees, report project status to superiors, and complete work in a manner that leads/motivates all members of the group and assures individual, coworker, and public safety in all weather and working conditions. Employees make decisions necessary to plan, organize, and complete their work with appropriate efficiency, and complete work in a manner that commands the respect of, or demonstrates appropriate courtesy to the public. Handles onsite questions and concerns from the public. Direct public contact while on job site. Employee contact principally with other crewmembers. In all instances, liability may be affected by improperly performed work. Assures the integrity of the park infrastructure through timely, total, and preventive maintenance of grounds, parking lots, drainage systems, natural area, golf courses, etc.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Mows, cuts brush, picks up leaves, repairs drainage systems, lays pipe and concrete, performs grading and other landscaping duties, clears storm damage, prunes trees, prepares surfaces for seeding/planting of vegetation, maintains adjusts and repairs watering systems, installs new landscapes, performs routine carpentry work, constructs boardwalks and trails, implements wetland, forestry, wildlife, and stream enhancement projects.
  • Assigns work done onsite and signs off on work that is completed.
  • May also perform all general duties necessary to repair, maintain, operate, and install basic city or park infrastructure systems. 
  • Uses backhoes, dump trucks, truck and trailer combinations, two-way radios, wide variety of hand and power tools, forklifts. 
  • Improperly completed work could delay availability of recreational facilities to users. Improperly completed work could also affect the city's image as well as the health and safety of park users.  Improper disposition of felled trees straddling park and private property could result in significant damage to both.

Qualifications

  • Valid, current driver's license. Must obtain Commercial Driver's License (CDL) endorsement within 12 months of hire date
  • First aid/CPR certification
  • Supervisory experience preferred 
  • WSDA Pesticide applicators license 
  • General knowledge of grounds maintenance methods, including aptitude in landscape construction, irrigation maintenance and natural resource enhancement.

Physical Demands:

  • Work involves walking, talking, hearing, using hands to handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls, and reaching with hands and arms.
  • Vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • The work environment is mostly outdoors in all kinds of weather conditions. 
  • Common hazards include traffic, confined, or underground spaces, chemicals, and equipment. 
  • One or more employees may be called in off duty to respond to emergencies or peak user demand. 
  • The employee may be required to push, pull, lift, and/or carry objects up to 50 pounds. 
  • Work may routinely require the employee to walk, stand, crawl, or stoop.
